Common bite problems
Crowding, spacing, overbite, crossbite and others – in plain words.
Every set of teeth and every bite is different. These are some of the problems we see most often, explained in plain English.
Crowding
There is not enough space, so teeth overlap or twist. Crowded teeth can be more difficult to keep clean.
Spacing
Gaps between the teeth.
Prominent top teeth (increased overjet)
The top front teeth stick out, which makes them more likely to be knocked and damaged.
Deep bite
The upper teeth cover too much of the lower teeth and can bite into the gum.
Open bite
When you bite together, the front teeth do not meet.
Crossbite
Some upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth, which can push the jaw to one side.
Underbite
The bottom front teeth sit in front of the top front teeth.
Sound familiar? Book an assessment and we will tell you what, if anything, needs treating. Health service (NHS) patients need their dentist to refer them; private patients can refer themselves. See also children and teenagers and braces for adults.
Questions and answers
Does every bite problem need treatment?
No. Some are mild and purely cosmetic. At your assessment, we explain what, if anything, needs treating and the options open to you.
Will my bite be treated on the health service (NHS)?
Only if it is severe enough under the IOTN scoring system. If it does not qualify, private treatment is available.
Can adults have these problems treated?
Yes. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, there is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment.
